Academic Standards for Kindergarten
Christ Community School offers a challenging academic program for its students. It is important for every student entering CCS to be well equipped at each grade level to face the challenges of the next grade. These skills are learned in Pre-Kindergarten 4 year old classes in addition to other pre-reading strategies. These skills are basic requirements for entering our Kindergarten program.
Incoming kindergarten students should have the following knowledge and skills to successfully enter into the CCS kindergarten program:
- Knows first and last name orally
- Knows their age
- Can briefly tell about a favorite toy or animal
- Able to identify all letters and sounds of the English alphabet
- Can match upper and lower case letters of the English alphabet
- Can orally identify the beginning letter of a word (i.e. dog; what letter does dog start with, what sound does dog start with)
- Can read introduced blends
- Can identify numbers 1-20
- Can order numbers 1-20
- Can continue the following patterns: AB ABC ABB AAB
- Can identify square, triangle, circle and rectangle
- Can match set of objects with 1 to 1 correspondence (i.e. 6 objects to 6 objects)
- Can match number to sets (i.e. number 6 to 6 objects)
- Can identify most, fewest, longest, shortest
- Knows some:
- days of the week
- months of the year
- date - Can count to 100 by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s
- Can write first name
- Uses scissors, glue, crayons, and pencils appropriately
